Annual Report 2015-16

Honourable Chief Guest of the day, Justice Santosh Hegde and all the dignitaries on the dais, Good afternoon! It is my proud privilege to place before you the annual report of the college for the academic year 2015 – 16.

Dr. NSAM First Grade College comes under the umbrella of the Nitte Education Trust(R), Mangalore, pioneers in the field of education for the last 35+ years. Nitte Education Trust has the distinction of having a University and 30+ institutions the salient ones being the colleges for Medicine, Engineering, Management, Dentistry and others. The Dr. NSAM First Grade College was established in 1999 to cater to the needs of students in need of quality education. It is affiliated to the Bangalore University.

In recent years our institution has steadily been building capacity to create a truly great college. In my view, greatness requires four things: wonderful students enjoying a tremendous student experience; very experienced and dedicated faculty; a supportive campus learning environment; and substantial financial resources. We have been indeed fortunate to have all four.

The institution has the benevolent patronage of its President, Mr. N. Vinaya Hegde. and the guidance of Dr. N.R Shetty, former Vice Chancellor of Bangalore University. Offering a blend of serenity and modernity, our college is situated in the sprawling 23 acre NMIT campus at Govindapura, Gollahalli, Yelahanka, Bengaluru.

Currently the college offers the 3 year B.Com degree course and has a student strength of 343 students. A team of 14 dedicated, well qualified and experienced teaching faculties and an efficient team of 10 non teaching staff help run the institution in an effective manner. Mr. Rohit Punja, the Administrator of the Nitte Education Trust is our mentor and guide in the daily administration of the institution and his eye for detail and vision for the institution helps us to stay focussed.

The College has 17 well ventilated classrooms, a well equipped Library, 2 fully equipped Computer Labs, two Audio Visual Rooms with Projection Facility, a new Seminar Hall with state of the Art Projection Facility, an Open Air Auditorium, Hostel Facility and playgrounds for Sports apart from NSS and NCC Rooms, a Ladies Common Room and a Commerce Lab.

The Library currently has a total of 6710 books, 834 reference books and subscribes to 9 leading newspapers in English and Kannada and 19 journals. This year we also initiated a SC/ST book bank. Our institution aims for holistic education and hence apart from offering the 3 year B.Com degree course, the college encourages every staff member and student to participate in various events, workshops and inter collegiate fests. It is our endeavour to nurture students so that they are prepared, in all respects, for life and the challenges they will face. This year has been a very productive one in more ways than one.

Our staff have participated in several national and international conferences and presented papers. Various Resource persons were also invited to share their experience and knowledge on various subjects with our students. All these have been highlighted in our college magazine – PRISM 2015-16. Some of our staff have been involved in Question Paper Setting and Invigilation as Sitting Squad for the Bangalore University Examinations apart from the regular evaluation work. Some of our staff members have also authored books. This year 1 of our staff members - Dr. Hemavathi was awarded her doctorate. Three others are working on their doctorate.

Our students have participated in NIGMA, an inter collegiate fest at Dr. NSAM First Grade College, Nitte and the annual Kreedotsava at Nitte. They have also participated in the Sports events organized by Bangalore University and Anadyanta an annual inter collegiate fest organized by NMIT where 4 of our students got 1st and 2nd place for different events.

Sports, NCC, NSS and Cultural and Literary Events coupled with Commerce and Management activities allow students to express their creativity and talents in diverse areas. Hence, programmes such as Freshers Day, Litfest, Product Launch and Product Marketing by the Commerce and Management Committee, Cultural Competitions such as Collage, Mehendi, Cook without Fire, Rangoli, the annual Sports Day and the Talent and Ethnic Day were organized for this purpose. Students participated in all these events in an enthusiastic manner.

The NSS seven day special camp at Byate village was a great success with 51 volunteers who showed their spirit of social service by doing Shramadan and Tree planting in the village, organizing a Dental and Cancer Detection Camp and conducting some awareness programs by Guest Lecturers. A Blood Donation Camp was organized on the 9th February 2016 in collaboration with the Lions Club of Megacity, Bangalore

Both the National Festivals – Independence Day and Republic Day were celebrated with patriotic fervor with students putting up cultural programmes.

This year we have taken the initiative to conduct certain value added courses for the benefit of our students. These courses are ‘Yoga’, ICWA & CPT Classes’, ‘Personality Development’ and ‘Employability Training’.

The Yoga Programme was formally inaugurated on 20th June 2015 by Swami Divyanandji of Swami Vivekananda Sahaja Ashtanga Yoga Ashram and Smt. Vanishree Vishwanath, Social Worker and President of Raithara Seva Shakara Sangha, Singanayakanahalli, Bangalore The Yoga Classes were conducted from 8.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. twice a week by Shri Muniraju Guru of the Vivekananda Yoga Kendra. Certificates were issued to all students who had completed the 30 hour programme at a simple valediction.

One of our final year students – Goutam has cleared the foundation course whereas two of our students – Shri Krishna and Vishnu Bhagwan have appeared for the Group I ICWA course and are planning to go to the next level. Another ist year student Shweta has also enrolled for the course.

Two industrial visits for the Final Years and Second Years to Fouress Engineering Works and Toyota Kirloskar respectively were also organized and students got firsthand experience of how an industry functions. They submitted Project Reports post the visits.

This year also saw us host an eminently successful International Conference in Kannada titled ‘SAMPIGE 2015’ on 15th September 2015. This conference attracted almost 55 delegates who presented papers on the theme - ‘Challenges faced by Language Teachers in the Current Educational Scenario’. The inaugural programme had Dr. H.C Boralingaiah, Former Vice Chancellor of Hampi Kannada University as the Chief Guest with Dr. Hema Chandra an Educational Consultant and Professor from Canada and Dr. Banjagere Jayaprakash the Director of Kannada Text Book Publication, as the Guests of Honour. Mr. Rohit Punja, the Administrator of the Nitte Education Trust presided over the function. The valedictory programme had Dr. L. N Mukundraju, Director, Kavya Mandala, Karnataka as the chief guest. The success of the conference was due to the co-operation of all the staff members and students who ensured that there were no hitches.

A 2 day visit to Nitte by the staff of both the First Grade and P.U College on the 30th September and 1st October 2015 helped us understand and appreciate the extent and reach of the Nitte Education Trust and the vision of our founder. A dinner hosted by our beloved President, Shri N Vinaya Hegde was the highlight of the trip along with the sightseeing and the beach visit. It gave us all an opportunity to interact with our sister institutions.

Staff development and in service education are key elements in the growth and development of an institution and in keeping with this philosophy we had five faculty development programmes this year by experienced educationists such as Prof. Rajshekar, Director, Staff Development, Nitte Education Trust, Ms. Rajajalakshmi the P.U Principal, Ms. Vijayam Kartha, Dr. Lalitha Ashwath, Professor of Bangalore University and Dr. Srikantaswamy, Former Director of Centre of Research, Christ University. In fact, I also conducted a programme.

Academics was given due importance and with regular internal assessments, close monitoring of attendance, mentoring and special classes our results have shown marked improvement.

The Alumni Meet and the More Nature Camp have now become an annual feature and this year also we organized an Alumni Meet on 27th February 2016 with almost 250 ex students turning up to interact with each other and the staff of the college. Prof. Victor the former Principal graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.

The More Nature Association Camp this year was held at a rustic home stay in Agumbe. 50 students participated in this camp from 3rd to 6th March 2016. It gave students an opportunity to appreciate Nature and its bounty and the joys of communing with it. Treks, Swimming, Desi Games, Camp Fire, Road Cleaning and Interaction with the high school students of a local Govt. School were all highlights of the camp.

This year thanks to generous patrons, Mr. I Jayaprasad Shetty, Mr. Ravindranath Marla and Dr. B Subhaschandra Shetty, we have instituted three new awards for: A girl and a boy of the final year showing academic excellence and a final year student showing excellence in Sports We thank Mr. Jayaprasad Shetty Mr. Ravindranath Marla and Dr. B Subhaschandra Shetty for their generosity and patronage.

This year also saw us initiating a Rain Water Harvesting Project both for the First Grade and P.U College as a part of our ‘Environmental Friendly’ measures. The other development was installing Fire Extinguishers and CCTVs in the premises and launching our own independent website.

This year we also extended the bus facility up to Rajanakunte on one route, Kogilu on the 2nd route and Yelahanka and back on the 3rd route to facilitate our students coming from these areas. Placements form an important part of our responsibility towards our students and this year we had the following companies offering employment opportunities to our students – TCS, Just Dial, Axis Bank, SBI, Muthootu Fin Corp, Accenture, Minacus and IntelNet Global Services. A total of 45 students have been placed so far.

Two Governing Council meetings were held on 3rd September 2015 and 22nd March 2016 respectively. The members gave valuable suggestions for the improvement of the college.

Last year, our college day was a stupendous success with the final year students really going out of their way to put up a magnificent show. This year also as you can see our Final Years have put in their efforts for an equally grand show.

I would like to place on record my deep gratitude and appreciation to our generous President Mr. N.Vinaya Hegde and our Mentor Dr. N.R Shetty. I also thank Mr. Rohit Punja, the Administrator of the Nitte Education Trust for his constant guidance and advice in the day to day running of the institution. He has initiated several measures that have helped the institution streamline its processes and optimize its potential.

I also thank the following heads of our sister institutions - the Principal of NMIT – Dr. Nagaraj and his staff, the Director of NSOM- Prof. Manjunath and his staff, Dr. Harish, HOD of our MBA Department and his staff and Ms. Rajalakshmy, the P.U Principal and her Staff for their whole hearted co-operation in all our endeavours.

The staff is the backbone of any institution and I thank each one my teaching and non teaching staff members for their unstinted support, collaboration and participation in all the college activities. An institution derives its image and strength from its students and it has been our endeavour to mould our students in a holistic manner to become responsible citizens. Our students have responded well and have participated in all the college activities with zeal and enthusiasm demonstrating leadership and initiative on more than one occasion. We wish them the very best for their future. We need to focus a little more on Academics and I am confident that the students will co-operate with us and make us happy.

I conclude by saying that we still have a long road ahead of us with many challenges but I am confident that together, we shall face these challenges with courage, renewed vigour and dedication. Thank you!
